What is ChatGPT?

(and what might it do for HR?)

What is ChatGPT and GPT-3 and who is OpenAI?

OpenAI has recently revealed an incredible AI application named ChatGPT that can respond to complex questions conversationally.

OpenAI is the company that has been researching artificial general intelligence (AGI) for a few years. (The goal of AGI is an interesting topic in and of itself!).

They created a machine learning model called GPT-3 and after working on it for a number of years, they developed an application called ChatGPT, for use regular humans to interact with the model.

The groundbreaking technology in ChatGPT was created by training it with human conversations, showing the model how humans interact when asking and answering questions. As a result of this innovative approach, many users are astonished at the quality of ChatGPT's responses which suggest that its capabilities could revolutionize information retrieval and change how we communicate with computers forever.

Siri and Alexa kind of do that, right?

Kind of, yes, but it's not the same. People who have been using the ChatGPT Research Preview are able to have much more intelligent conversations than they'd normally report with something like Siri or Alexa.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI based on GPT-3.5 (a tweaked improvement from the main release of GPT-3), a powerful language model chatbot that can interact in conversation and deliver responses with incredible realism.

With its capacity to predict the next word or phrase accurately within a sentence, this sophisticated AI has been equipped with Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) to make it even better at comprehending instructions and producing outputs that meet human expectations.

In short, ChatGPT goes above and beyond most other bots out there when it comes to quality conversations!

The chatbot's strength lies in its ability to understand natural language — it can interpret commands and respond in a way that sounds indistinguishable from a human.

What are the potential use cases for ChatGPT in HR and Recruiting?

ChatGPT has the potential to impact the HR and Recruiting industry.

As you'll see from the prompts on this site, it could be used for candidate onboarding, helping companies source candidates, providing interview coaching and guidance, understand vaues, sending personalized emails and handling a range of other HR related tasks.

GPT for HR explores some of these use cases with our sample prompts.

Here's one example, need a consultant for your EVP and values? Bear in mind this answer had no other inputs.

How do you start?

Probably by playing around. Go to https://chat.openai.com/chat to sign up for a free account and start chatting.

The ChatGPT interface is the only way to interact with ChatGPT at the moment, so the best experience is by doing.

One warning. You don't really know where the answers are coming from. Proceed with caution.

The GPT-3 corpus of training data is from 2021 and prior and one thing is for certain, it has trained on some outdated and biased practices as far as HR and Recruiting are concerned.

As such, the "human in the loop" is you, don't blindly follow the ChatGPT output without critical thinking and, if needed, consulting others with expertise in spotting problematic terms, tactics and strategies.
